NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream: Part 2

*Note 11/12/14- I updated the photos in this post*

This is part two of my review/swatches of NYX’s Soft Matte Lip Creams. You can check out part 1 here if you haven’t already. As I said in my first post, I purchased 8 of the 11 available shades and this second post contains the more pink based shades in the range.

Before I show swatches of these colours I have to say that I’m really impressed with the quality of these lip products. Everything from the shade range to the packaging to the product itself just screams ‘high end’ so it’s fantastic that these are only $6 each! NYX has definitely stepped their game up and I hope this encourages other cheaper brands to do the same.

The colours I’m swatching will be #6 Istanbul, #7 Addis Ababa, #8 San Paulo and #11 Milan.

From left to right: #6 Istanbul, #7 Addis Ababa, #8 San Paulo and #11 Milan

The first shade is #6 Istanbul and it’s a pale bubblegum pink. Correct me if I’m wrong since I don’t own the original Viva Glam Gaga but, from the online swatches I’ve seen, this shade looks like it could be a close match. I don’t usually like such pale pinks but I think this shade actually looks fab with a smokey eye.

This next shade is #7 Addis Ababa and I LOVE this colour! It’s brighter than it’s showing up on my lip swatch but it’s a really bright blue toned pink. I think it’s a very similar if not brighter version of NARS Schiap. I’m going to be doing some dupe posts soon so I’ll definitly be swatching this with some other bright pinks I own.

This next shade is #8 San Paulo. I think it’s meant to be ‘Sao Paulo’ but it has ‘San Paulo’ written on the tube. This shade is a raspberry pink so it’s a pink with quite a bit of red in it. I thought it might be similar to Viva Glam Cyndi but I think Cyndi has more coral through it. This is a great shade to ease yourself into red’s if you’re a bit colour shy.

The last shade is #11 Milan and it’s a gorgeous mid tone pink. This colour is really pretty but I find that I have to wear a slightly darker lipliner with it to make it work with my skin tone.

That’s all of the shades I own and hopefully the swatches were helpful. I am considering getting the shades Amsterdam and Monte Carlo which are the reds in this range and if/when I do I’ll definitely post up the swatches for them.

So which colour shade has been your favourite? Will you be checking these out or passing?

NYX Soft Matte Lip Creams: Part 1

* Note: I updated this post on 16 July 2014 and added new photos which better captured the shades*

As you can tell from the title, today’s post is about NYX’s Soft Matte Lip Creams. This product is in between a lip stain and liquid lipstick and is matte as the name suggests. There are 11 shades available and I had a bit of a psychic moment when I just knew I would love these so I decided to purchase 8 of the available shades. I purchased mine from for $6 US each. I decided to pass on the shade Tokyo which was a very light milky pink and I also passed on the 2 red shades although I may go back and purchase these two later.

They come in a tube which looks to be the same size as a standard MAC lipgloss. The lid on these has a lovely NARS-esque matte finish which makes them really comfortable to use. The applicator is a doe foot which is cut at an angle and is actually pretty good at applying the product to the lips. This product is buildable in coverage so you can apply a bit for a sheerer more stained look or build it up for a more opaque lipstick like finish. The product goes on really smooth and my lips feel great while I’m wearing it.

These are still a matte product though and so they pick up on any dryness so I always exfoliate and put on some lip balm before wearing these. The finish on these is lovely because they really do finish into a ‘soft’ matte so your lips don’t look parched which can happen with more unforgiving matte lip products. Each of the shades has a number as well as a name which corresponds to various cities around the world. The colours I’m posting about in part 1 of the 2 posts are #02 Stockholm, #4 London, #5 Antwerp and #9 Abu Dhabi.

This is #2 Stockholm on my lips. This colour is a peachy nude and I think it would look great with a smokey eye. I actually really like this colour and find it easy to wear because it isn’t so pale that it makes me look like I’m wearing concealer on my lips plus it has a good balance of peach, pink and brown.

The next shade is #4 London. This shade is similar to Stockholm except it has more brown to it. If I were to pick between this colour and Stockholm, I would definitely pick this one because I think it’s a more flattering nude with my skin tone.

This next colour is #5 Antwerp and it’s quite a bright coral-pink. This shade isn’t my favourite but that’s probably because it’s definitely a Spring/Summer shade and Australia’s in Autum/Winter mode. I think I’ll give this colour more love once the sun comes out again.

The last shade is #9 Abu Dhabi and it’s a darker version of London. This colour is a perfect neutral versus nude shade. I think it’s probably my favourite out of the bunch since it’s so easy to wear and looks as good with a smokey eye as it does with a really neutral look.

Have any of you tried these yet? What do you think of them? Stay tuned for part 2!

NYX Jumbo Eye Pencil Swatches

I thought I’d better post up the swatches to the NYX Jumbo Eye pencils from my recent haul before I forgot! I’ve also included swatches of the Milk and Yoghurt pencils because I haven’t swatched those yet. You can see swatches of the other 9 I own which are more neutral shades and my original review here.

From left to right the colours are Milk, Yoghurt, Yellow, Hot Pink, Pacific, Electric Blue, Rocky Mountain Green and Purple Velvet.

Out of these colours Milk, Pacific and Purple Velvet are my favourites. Milk is a great staple shade for layering under any bright eyeshadows to really make them pop. Pacific is wrongly named but a gorgeous lavender shade nonetheless while Purple Velvet is perfect for a purple smokey eye. Just be aware that as with all of the NYX Jumbo eye pencils, these are all super creamy so they crease like crazy if you don’t wear a good primer or base underneath them and then seal them with powder shadow. I haven’t tried these all out in a look yet but I’ll post pics as soon as I do.

Lip liner love with NYX

I’m a self confessed makeup junkie and I’m always looking for my next hit so when I saw some NYX lipliners on sale for 50% you know I had to get some! I’ve never been big on lipliners but I’m starting to see their worth so I bought 12 of the colours I thought I’d get some use out of.

Here are the swatches in three different light settings. The colours are from left to right:
Row 1: 849-Beige, 810-Natural, 828- Ever, 815- Toast
Row 2: 840- Rose, 839- Dolly Pink, 816- Fuschia, 838- Purple Rain
Row 3: 841- Coral, 852- Pumpkin Pie, 813- Plush Red, 817- Hot Red

I love these lipliners! I’ve never really understood the point of spending alot of money on lipliners so it works out well that these are cheap and work really well. Like most lip liners these are a bit drying when used all over the lip but a tiny bit of balm under these makes them comfortable. Just don’t put on too much balm or they slip and slide all over the place. I love the fact that NYX has such a wide variety of colours and so many varying tones of the same colour so you can find the exact red or pink or natural colour you’re looking for.

My favourite colour out of the bunch has to be Purple Rain because I’m on a big purple kick at the moment. It has the perfect mix of purple and pink in it and it looks great with MAC Style Curve lipstick. I also managed to find a really good ‘my lips but better’ shade in the colour Ever. Every girl needs a ‘My lips but better’ lipliner, lipgloss and lipstick and now my trinity is complete! My lips have more pink than brown through them and this lipliner picks that colour up really well.

Here are some lip swatches. My lips are quite pigmented but they also have a lot of colour variation through them and my top lip is slightly darker than my bottom lip which is common for women of colour.

You can see how dry the pencil is but I hadn’t put any balm on. The colour is really good though and it evens out any discolouration on my lips.

I added a slick of clear gloss on top to show how you can easily wear a lip liner out without having to put on lipstick as well. I’ve been too lazy to mess around with lipstick during this hot Aussie summer so I’ve been using a lot of my lipliners in this way. You get the colour without the effort of wearing a lipstick.

So what do you guys think of the NYX lip pencils? Are you liking any of these shades or do you have some that are must have’s that I’ve missed? Let me know! And for any Aussies that are reading, NYX is available at random stores but you can always buy them online from The selection isn’t as big as what you can get from the US but it’s pretty decent. Otherwise you can try out which is a US retailer. Happy shopping!

Transforming makeup

I’ve only recently discovered all these cool things you can do to your makeup to make them more user friendly and I feel like there’s a whole other world of makeup techniques I’ve been introduced to that I just never even considered were possible. I’ve already done a post on depotting my MAC eyeshadows but I just found out how to depot (or de-pen) my NYX Jumbo eye pencils and how to press pigments into an eyeshadow pan.

I’ve already gone through and depotted all the NYX pencils I have and put them into containers but I’ll do a how to post once I get some more. I had a few problems with some of the methods talked about on Youtube and had to tweak the process to make it work for me. Here are pics of what they look like in the pots. I bought some stackable pill containers from a $2 store to put them in. Some came out messier than others but it was a matter of trial and error.

I’ll also be pressing all my pigments as soon as I go and buy some rubbing alcohol and then I’ll do a post on it. I’m so excited to try this! I especially want to see how it works out on my MAC Solar Bits because the texture of the Solar Bits are a bit annoying to work with due to the fact that they literally are in ‘bits’ so there’s clumps of product you have to attempt to break apart. Without the right base this product tends to go on really clumpy and uneven so hopefully pressing it will make it a bit smoother and easier to use.

Hunt for the perfect red lip

I’ve always loved the way a bold red lip looks but I gave up on ever being able to wear one myself because I always thought the colour made me look too ethnic for want of a better word. I now realise that this has more to do with the tone of lipstick you wear and the type of makeup you wear with it. I’ve realised that anyone can pull of a bold red lip as long as your eye makeup is absolutely at a minimum and if the tone is one that works with your own skin tone. As I have a warmer skin tone, I’ve been trying to find a lip stick in a warmer toned red. The three red lip colours that I’ve bought so far are the NYX Jumbo lip pencil in deep red, NARS velvet matte lip pencil in Dragon Girl and a Shu Uemura lipstick in RD165.

Here are the swatches:

NYX Jumbo Lip Pencil in Deep Red.
I bought this one on a whim when I was buying the jumbo eye pencils and I have to say that I do really like it. I don’t think it’s my perfect red though. It applies really smoothly though and it is really pigmented and doesn’t dry out your lips. This was a bargain at $4.95.

Shu Uemura Lipstick in RD165
I bought this lip colour as it was touted as being the perfect shade of red that works for everyone. Well, I don’t really agree with that statement. It’s an ok shade of red but it’s just not as vibrant as I was hoping it would be. I’ve tried this on one of my friends with a very light skin colour as well and it wasn’t vibrant enough on her either. I really like the texture though. I haven’t given up on this one yet. I’ve tried it with a red lip gloss on top and that definitely helps the colour.

Nars Dragon Girl Velvet Matte Lip Pencil
I fell in love with this colour when the MA put it on me and have been lusting after it ever since. I don’t think the colour is translating that well on camera but it is a bright orange toned red. I really like this colour and the texture of these NARS pencils are amazing on the lips.

Dragon Girl with the Shu Uemura on top
I tried layering the Shu Uemura colour on top of the NARS pencil and I think the end result was a bit closer to what I’m looking for. It makes a really vibrant red with some depth.

Despite how I feel about these reds, the hunt for the perfect red lip continues!
