Lip of the Day – L’Oreal Shine Caresse in Milady

I’ve been trying to make a conscious effort to shop my stash so I decided to pull out my L’Oreal Shine Caresse glosses ( or L’Oreal Colour Caresse Wet Shine Stain as they’re known in the US) and give them another go. I’ve been stuck on my matte shades for quite some time so it’s going to take a few tries before I can get back into the gloss!

I decided to wear the shade Milady over the NYX lip liner in Prune. Milady is a beautiful plummy purple shade with blue iridescence through it. It’s really vampy but has a brightness to it that I love.

I think it has a nice brightening effect on my complexion. One of my personal makeup rules is that I pair dark lips with more radiant skin to keep the look from getting too dark. I also always add a blush in a similar tone to keep from looking too washed out. I really liked the whole look and how everything paired together.

I’ve been asked before what I wear in these quick posts so I made sure to photograph my products this time! If you’re interested, the products I used are: Hourglass Mineral Veil Primer, MAC Pro Longwear Concealer in NC42, MAC Mineralize Skin Finish Natural in Medium Dark, By Terry Eclat de Rose Sheer Tinted Moisturiser in No 4 Tan, Dior Golden Savannah 5 colour palette, Rimmel Waterproof Gel Eyeliner in Black, Burberry Effortless Eyebrow Definer in Ash Brown, Revlon Bold Lacquer by Grow Luscious mascara, Savvy by DB blush in Glamourama and Dior Diorskin Shimmer Powder in Amber Diamond (old formula).

NYX Soft Matte Lip Creams: Part 3

I’ve been wanting to put this post up for so long hence why the photos of me in this post are from months ago! I go through phases with my lip products and, for most of this year, I’ve been using matte liquid lipsticks almost exclusively. I’ve already posted on some of the other shades in this range here and here so I’m not going to go into detail again here about texture, price, longevity etc so please check my older reviews for that information.

1

The shades that I’ve swatched for today’s post were all new for 2014 except for the shade Monte Carlo which was part of the original release. The shades I picked up are swatched below and, from left to right, are: Cannes, Prague, Morocco, Monte Carlo, Copenhagen and Transylvania.

3

Cannes is a gorgeous muted rosey mauve shade. It’s very pretty and something that would look quite natural (as opposed to nude) on most skin tones. I can see this be used as a good work shade or even a really pretty bridal lip.

6

Some comparison swatches are, from left to right: Nyx soft matte lip creams in Cannes, Stockholm, Abu Dhabi and London. I’ve got lip and full face swatches of these shades in my previous reviews. For reference, Abu Dhabi is one of my favourite nude shades on my skin tone as it doesn’t wash me out or look too ‘concealer lips’ like. London is more nude on me but is still wearable.

7.1

Prague is a muted bright (is that an oxy moron?) blue toned pink. There is another shade in this range called Addis Ababa and that is very bright but of a similar tone. Prague is like Addis Ababa’s more reserved sister and a more wearable option if you’re wanting to break into the bright pink lips look.

7

8

9

From left to right: Soft matte lip creams in Prague, San Paulo and Milan. Prague is definitely my favourite out of the pinks swatched below. Milan is way to light for me and not very wearable unless I wear it over a darker lip liner and top it with a gloss.

10.1

Morroco is a bright coral orange shade. This is so gorgeous and very flattering as it brightens the face instantly!

10

11

12

From left to right: Soft matte lip cream in Morocco, Kardashian Beauty Enjoystick in Retro Red and NARS Heat Wave. Morocco is very similar to the other shades swatched below but the other two are more red toned than coral.
13.1

Monte Carlo is a gorgeous blue toned red. I love this shade but you all know by now that I rarely meet a red I don’t love!

13

14

15

From left to right: Soft Matte Lip Cream in Monte Carlo, Bourjois Rouge Edition Velvet in Grand Cru and Lime Cream Velveteen in Red Velvet. The Bourjois shade is deeper and more blue toned than Monte Carlo and is my favourite out of the three below with Monte Carlo coming up as a close second. Red Velvet is pretty but more of a cherry red and I’m very partial to a blue tone as they pop more against my warm toned skin.

16.1

Aah Copenhagen, the shade that has my heart! I love this beautiful plum shade and have worn it constantly over the last few months. It’s going to be one of my staples this autumn and winter.

16

17

18

From left to right: Copenhagen, Wet and Wild Megalast lipstick in Cherry Bomb, Rimmel Moisture Renew in Sloane’s Plum. I thought I’d have more shades in my collection that were similar to this but it was somewhat unique. What can I say about this shade except that you need it in your life! I’ve seen it on many different skin tones from light to dark and I love it on most people as it’s vampy without being too dark.

19.1

Transylvania is a dark violet plum shade and it’s been named quite well! I think it’s a very sophisticated but super dark lip shade. It also tends to apply quite patchy so I wouldn’t use this without a lip liner underneath.

19

20

21

From left to right: Transylvania, Rimmel Lasting Finish lipstick in 04 and Maybelline Color Sensational lipstick in Midnight Plum. The plum tone to this shade makes it more wearable than the other two shades swatched. I have yet to wear it out but I’ve earmarked it for this winter season!

Have you tried any of these shades? Which is your favourite?

~Over the Top FOTD~ Antipodean Beauties Challenge

1

It’s time for another Runway inspired Antipodean Beauties challenge. This weeks theme is ‘over the top’ and I thought the Dior 2011 Fall/Winter Haute Couture makeup was appropriate. Rainbow eyes and a vampy lip seem pretty over the top to me!

2

I think that the model’s brows was covered and then drawn higher for the original look but I decided not to for my look. Covering the brows would allow for more space to fill in and, if I ever recreate this again, I think I would go to the trouble of covering my brows.

3

The look calls for many bright shades so I decided to use my NYX Jumbo Eye Pencils and Sugarpill shadows. The shades I used are swatched above and from left to right they are NYX Jumbo pencils in Hot Pink, Yellow, Rocky Mountain Green and Electric Blue. The Sugarpill shadows are Dollipop, Buttercupcake, Acidberry, Midori, Mochi and Afterparty. The product swatched on the end is the Eyeko Skinny Liquid Liner in Purple.

I used the NYX Jumbo Eye Pencils as a base and patted the Sugarpill shadows on top. I also applied Sugarpill Tako (white) to the inner corner and underneath the blue on the outer corner to anchor the brighter colours. I finished up by lining my eyes to add some definition.

9

For the lips I used NYX Cocoa lip liner topped with Wet’n’Wild Megalast Lip Colour in Cherry Bomb.

10

Lisa made me do it: dark Lips

I was watching Lisa Eldridge putting on makeup as I did my makeup this morning and was inspired  to rock a vampy lip. The video for Elle magazine was on how to wear bold lip colour’s and she used some great dark lipsticks. I’ve already done a post on some of my tips for pulling off dark lips here.

I really wanted to wear my new Guerlain Rouge G Jewel lipstick in Gigolo so I paired it with NYX Cola lipliner to get the darkness that I was after. The liner is on its own is on the left and Gigolo on its own is on the right. Seriously, how amazing is Gigolo?? I love it! I bought the NYX lip liner for the purpose of creating a dark base to layer lighter lipsticks on top. As you can see below, wearing it on its own doesn’t really do much for me.

I am in love with the combination of both shades together. They create this really lovely vampy plum shade that’s intense yet flattering.

What do you think? What’s your favourite dark lip shade?

Beauty on a Budget: NYX Round Lipsticks Part 2

The rest of the shades I have in the NYX Round Lipsticks are (from left to right): Heredes, Snow White, Milan, Louisiana and Tea Rose.

Heredes: This is a gorgeous coral/terracotta shade and I am in love with it! It looks so gorgeous against a warmer skin tone and I think it works well as an autumn or spring shade.

Snow White: I’ll admit that I bought this for the name alone but I really like it. It’s a slightly deeper red than I usually buy but it looks lovely and luscious on the lips.

Milan: This is what I would class as a true mauve shade. It’s relatively easy to pull off but it’s not my favourite.

Louisiana: I bought this shade on a whim and I’m glad I did because it is gorgeous! It’s a lovely bright pink that leans warm.

Tea Rose: This is one of those shades that gets recommended alot which is why I picked it up and it’s nice but not my favourite with my skin tone. I’ve seen lots of girl who are of a fairer skin tone rock this and it looks awesome on them!

Beauty on a Budget: NYX Round Lipsticks Part 1

I’ve bought a few of NYX’s Round Lipsticks and I thought it was time I swatched them.

From left to right: Creamy Beige, Champagne, Cocoa and B52

Creamy Beige: Concealer Lips alert! Not the most flattering shade on me so I definitely need to pair it with a darker lipliner.

Champagne: This shade looks a bit strange on me and I haven’t figured out why. It has a slight purple irridesence to it and is more of a frost shade.

Cocoa: I love this shade! I think it’s a gorgeous neutral lip colour that’s really easy to wear. I think it’s also very work friendly.

B52: This shade is slightly pinker than the above shade but still quite pretty.

The NYX Round Lipsticks have a cult following mainly because they’re cheap but still quite pigmented. These products are super creamy and go on really well but my major pet peeve with these is the smell. They all have a really strong artificial smell which I haven’t been able to pinpoint but I do find it quite offensive. Luckily it does wear off after a while but I still wish NYX would just make these without a scent!

Since these are really creamy, the wear time isn’t very long but I can still usually get about 2 or 3 hours of wear if I don’t drink or eat. I purchased mine from cherryculture.com. They’re usually $2.50 on this site but I sometime wait till there’s a 50% off sale on NYX and then buy them.
