2013 Favourites- Hair Products

Here’s my last 2013 favourites post- hair products! I don’t tend to do a lot of reviews on hair products and tools but I do try quite a lot and have some firm favourites which I’m sharing with you today.

Best Dry Shampoo- Juuce Dirty Deeds Dry Shampoo

I love this stuff and so far I haven’t found anything that works better . I’ve already reviewed it so check out my review for more information on it.

Best Hair Brush- Tangle Teezer

You’ve probably seen lots of reviews on this and that’s because it actually does what it says! Even when my hair is at its most unmanageable, this brush goes through it with ease and without any pain. It works well on both wet or dry hair so if you struggle to find a good brush, give this one a go.

Best Hair Treatment range- De Lorenzo Tricho Scalp Balance range

I have a very dehydrated/sensitive scalp which gets easily irritated by lots of shampoos and conditioners. I’d tried so many products that were meant to help with this (and even went organic) but nothing helped until my hairdresser recommended this range. It’s a 3 step program and, while I like the shampoo and the conditioner is OK, it’s the toner that’s the miracle product. If you have an easily irritated scalp, trust me, you need to check this stuff out!

Best Leave In Conditioner- Moroccan Oil Hydrating Styling Cream

This is another recommendation from my hairdresser (check them out if you live in Melbourne’s west because they’re so good- Soul Scissors) and I love it. It’s very lightweight which is one of my requirements from any leave in products and smells so lovely.

Best Hair Mask- Evo The Great Hydrator Moisture Mask

This is also a recommendation from my hair dresser and is the best hair mask I’ve ever tried and I’ve tried many from low end to high end. Evo make really good products with cute names and hilarious product descriptions. I own quite a few things from this line but this mask is my favourite.

Best Clarifying Shampoo- Phyto Phytoneutre Clarifying Detox Shampoo

This stuff is amazing and smells so good and refreshing. It leaves your hair feeling squeaky clean and it’s the one I keep repurchasing. It’s a bit annoying to buy though since you have to get it online but it’s worth the effort in my opinion. You can check out my full review on it here.

Phew, we’ve finally reached the end and I have to say, I’m glad this is a once a year thing because it would be exhausting to do this frequently!

Let me know what some of your hair product favourites are below

2013 Favourites- Eyes & Brows

I’m working my way through these favourites posts a lot slower than I’d expected but there’s only one more to go after this one. Today I’m looking at my favourite products for the eye and brow area so let’s get into it.

Favourite Eyebrow Definer- MAC Brow Crayon in Stud

I’ve been using the MAC Brow Crayon for years because it’s easy to buy, relatively cheap and the shade Stud is the perfect dark cool brown for my colouring.  I’ve tried brow markers, pens, pencils and gel products in the past but this is the one that I keep going back to. It’s just really easy to use and if I get a little carried away with it and over apply, I just brush through my brows quickly with a spoolie brush and it’s fine.

Favourite Eyebrow Gel- Laura Mercier Eye Brow Gel

I did a bit of a mini rave about Laura Mercier Products in my last favourites posts so it’s not going to surprise you that I’ve got another one of her products in this post. I used to favour coloured brow gels but have stuck to clear brow gels since discovering this one. I like it because it goes on well without getting that dry, crunchy texture that some brow gels have and it keeps my brows in place all day. If you’re like me and have brow hairs that grow in every direction, you need this in your life.

Favourite Eyeshadow Primer- NARS Smudgeproof Base

I was a die hard Urban Decay Primer Potion fan but I started to get a rash from it (still haven’t worked out why, maybe a silicone allergy?) so I switched to the Too Faced Shadow Insurance primer. I loved that but the product kept separating which I found really frustrating. I’d heard lots of rave reviews about the NARS one so I decided to give it a go and haven’t looked back since. This primer lets me do what the others couldn’t and that’s using shadow or concealer directly on top of it and have no creasing even after a really hot day. I must have really oily lids because with the other two the only way I could avoid any creasing at all was if I put primer down first, a paint pot on top of that and then the eyeshadow. My eyelids have also stopped reacting so whatever is in here is working really well for me.

Favourite Mascara- Loreal Voluminous Mascara in Carbon Black

I used to use this mascara for years but stopped to go see what else was out there but I came back to it in a big way this last year. I love everything about this product and the way it lengthens and thickens my lashes. It also holds a curl really well and I like it just as much with dramatic eye makeup as I do with a very bare eye look.

Favourite Liquid Eyeliner- Stila Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner in Black

This liquid liner by Stila has become my favourite because it’s very black and long lasting which is a necessity for me since my lids are so oily. I also really like the brush and the product comes out really easily and gives a lovely smooth line.

Favourite Eyeshadow Palette- Stila ‘In the Light’ palette

Stila has been one of my stand out brands in 2013 because their products have been really high quality with great colour choices and the prices are also quite reasonable. I have a lot of palettes but the ‘In the Light’ palette has been a constant go-to for every day looks because the colours just work well together. You can tell from the picture above that Bubbly, the gold shade, has been my most used but you’ll find  that the gold shade is always the first to go in any palette I own. What can I say, I love me some gold lids!

Swatched above from left to right is the top row of the palette: Bare, Kitten, Bliss, Sunset and Sandstone. The other two shades I use the most are Kitten for an inner corner highlight and Sandstone to blend out the crease. I also mix in a little Bliss with the Sandstone if I want something a little more subtle in the crease. Sunset is also really pretty on the lid and it’s the shade I wish I’d remember to use more.

Swatched above from left to right is the bottom row of the palette: Bubbly, Gilded Gold, Luster, Night Sky and Ebony. Gilded Gold is probably the most disappointing shade in the palette because it’s not very pigmented, has a lot of fallout and just seems unnecessary. The palette would have been better if this shade had been replaced with a mid-tone taupe that could be used on the lid. I don’t tend to use this row much, apart from the gold shade, because I like more brown toned neutral looks. The last three shades are perfect for a cooler toned smokey eye look though.

2013 Favourites- Lips & Cheeks

This was one of the hardest categories to narrow down because I own many lip and cheek products that I love. I tend to use particular ones more depending on the season, look and event that I’m going to. Since this is meant to be a favourites post, I’ve picked the products I’m just as happy to wear to work as I am to a night out.

Favourite Lip Balm- EOS Smooth Sphere Lip Balm

I alternate between these and the Burt’s Bees lip balms but ever since I restocked while travelling in the States, these are what I’ve been applying non-stop. In the picture above I’ve got the Honeysuckle Honeydew, Lemon Drop and Summer Fruits flavours  but have tried the Strawberry Sorbet and Sweet Mint in the past. I really like mint so the Sweet Mint is probably my favourite but I don’t find any of the scents overpowering. The texture on these is really lovely and my lips stay nice and moisturised.

Favourite lipgloss- Laura Mercier Lip Glace in Bare Beige

I have a soft spot for Laura Mercier products and think they really don’t get the hype they deserve. They are such fantastic staple products and you can tell that a lot of thought has gone into them because they just work. I’ve always loved Laura Mercier brushes and concealing products and was obsessed with the tinted lip balms for a very long time and this gloss is now joining the ranks. It’s the perfect nude for my skin tone because it’s not too nude, it’s not sticky and I can wear it all day and my lips feel moisturised.

Favourite Budget lipstick- Maybelline Color Sensational lipstick in Vivid Rose

I discovered Maybelline lip products last year and haven’t looked back. Budget never looked and felt so great. The Color Sensational range in general is really pigmented with sophisticated colour choices you might have previously only seen from high end brands. This shade in particular, Vivid Rose, is one that I keep wearing because it’s a really flattering shade on my skin tone and looks just as good dressed down as it does dressed up.

Favourite High End lipstick- Guerlain Rouge G lipstick in Garconne

Guerlain Rouge G’s are my favourite luxury lip product from packaging to texture and this shade is my favourite from all the Rouge G’s I own. It’s the only shade I can consider coming close to my fallen favourite, Chanel Dragon Rouge Allure Laque. It’s feel really comfortable and light on the lips but is packed with pigment. They are pricey but if you want to treat yourself, this is the way to go.

Favourite Blush- NARS Powder Blush in Gina

This was the blush I kept reaching for day after day in 2013 because it’s easy to wear and works well with almost any colour look. It’s give a really pretty peachy glow to my cheeks and the lack of shimmer means it looks really natural when worn. As a NARS blush, it is very pigmented but much easier to work with than some other shades because it isn’t as intense. It’s a great everyday shade and I think it would lovely across many skin tones because it’s not too orange.

2013 Favourites – Base Makeup

The products I’ve included in this post won’t surprise you if you’re a regular reader of my blog because they’re the things I keep raving about. I would have worn at least one of these products every day over the last year and they’re the things I would/have repurchased once they run out. That’s pretty high praise from a beauty blogger! So off we go:

Favourite Foundation- Burberry Velvet Foundation

There was one other contender for this title but that was also a Burberry foundation (the Burberry Sheer Foundation) but this one ultimately won out. After trying and loving both the Sheer and Velvet versions, I have to pick the velvet because it works better on my oil-prone skin. It also has the ability to be sheered out and built up which is always a plus. I know I say this all the time but if you haven’t already, get yourself to a Burberry counter, stat! The shade range is so good and is perfect for anyone who find other high end foundations too pink. For reference, I use the shade 208 in the Velvet and 10 in the Sheer.

Favourite Under Eye Concealer- Burberry Sheer Luminous Concealer

This concealer may have ‘sheer’ in the product name but that doesn’t stop it from giving really great coverage with a natural finish. I love it because the colour match (Amber) is perfect, the texture is lovely and hydrating and it doesn’t crease.  I can’t rave about it enough! An honorable mention for this category goes to the Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer (in Medium/dark 2- Caramel).

Favourite Corrector- Laura Mercier Under Eye Perfector in Orange/Yellow

I have mentioned this so many times in the past that I don’t know what to say about it now that I haven’t already said! Basically, if you have dark circles and are of a darker skin tone, you need this in your life! Concealers that usually go ashy on you will look natural when applied on top of this and, depending on your skin tone, you might even be able to get away with it on its own.

Favourite Setting Powder- NARS Light Reflecting Loose Setting Powder

For years I was in love with the Laura Mercier Secret Brightening Powder but that has now been overtaken by the NARS powder. I have it in both the pressed and loose versions and I much prefer the loose powder. The powder is very fine and sets under eye concealer like a boss! Word to the wise though, apply it with a light hand lest you end up with the dreaded reverse racoon eyes in flash photography!

Favourite Powder Foundation- MAC Mineralize Skin Finish Natural in Medium Dark

I’ve gone through at least 4 compacts of this stuff because I haven’t found anything else so far that I love as much. I apply it lightly to set my foundation or buff it in on it’s own on more ‘natural makeup days. The shade works well on me and it doesn’t turn orange or oxidise like some other MAC products.

2013 Favourites- Skin Care

I went through a major skincare obsession about 2 years ago which led to me trying various cleansers, moisturisers, exfoliators, masks and skin treatments. I found many that I really liked and I might have even repurchased if I didn’t have so many others to get through. Today’s post is a round up of my favourite’s so far and the ones that I keep going back to.

1. Favourite Skincare Tool– Clarisonic Mia

I love my Clarisonic and have been using it for 3 years now and attribute my much improved skin to it. I used to have a lot of pigmentation and used to break out all the time so I decided to pare down my skin care routine. I started cleansing with the Clarisonic and Cetaphil Gentle Cleanser and finished up by moisturising with the Cetaphil moisturiser. I did this for a few months and my skin started improving exponentially. I didn’t change my makeup routine but having this proper cleansing routine meant that it didn’t matter.

2. Favourite Use Alone Cleanser- Emma Hardie Natural Lift and Scuplt Moringa Cleansing Balm

Having two ‘cleanser’ options is kind of cheating but I like one for use on its own and one for use with the Clarisonic. My Emma Hardie Cleansing Balm is my favourite for use on its own because I can work it into the skin to remove my makeup then wash it off with a face cloth and feel confident my skin is clean. My bottle is a little worse for wear from delivery but still works great. I love cleansing balms and oils and this one is a great option.

3.. Favourite Cleanser for use with Clarisonic- Alba Botanica Natrual Hawaiian Facial Cleanser

I bought this while I was travelling in the States and fell in love with it and have been using it non-stop since then. I find it to be a perfect companion for my Clarisonic and the pineapple and papaya enzymes act as a chemical exfoliant. It also doesn’t irritate my eyes or leave my skin feeling dry and tight.

4. Favourite Toner- Hadalabo Super Hyaluronic Acid Moisturizing Lotion

This is kind of cheating because I don’t know if this is a toner as such but I use it in place of a toner. My friend picked it up for me while she was travelling in Japan quite a few months ago and I’ve used it every day since. The Hyaluronic Acid leaves my skin plump and moisturised and is really gentle.

One of the main philosophies I have about my skin now is to use gentle and hydrating products instead of the harsher, drying products that I used to favour. I didn’t like the effect alcohol based toners had on my skin and have seen an improvement since I started using this instead. Another product that I like using is the SKII Facial Treatment Essence but the price means that I only purchase it some times.

5. Favourite Moisturiser- Aveeno Positively Radiant Daily Moisturiser with SPF 15

No matter how many fancy moisturiser’s I try, I always come back to this and this is my 3rd bottle so far. The moisturiser isn’t greasy and works well on my normal-combination skin. I love Aveeno products because they’re really no-nonsense, they do what they say without the bells and whistles and they’re very budget friendly.

6. Favourite Breakout Controlling Product- La Roche Posay Effaclar Duo Corrective and Unclogging Anti-imperfection Care

This is a blogger/youtuber cult favourite and that’s for a well deserved reason- it works! Or at least it does for me. I’ve stopped using products that dry out my pimples and use this instead. I put it on my face when I feel a break out coming on or when I’m likely to break out such as right before getting my period. Since I’ve started using this, I haven’t had many breakouts and when I do, it’s usually because I forgot to use it. If you are planning on buying it, make sure you don’t get the acne treatment by accident because that one has Benzyl Peroxide and is spot treatment versus this one which is like a clear, hydrating gel texture that can be used all over the face.

7. Favourite Exfoliator- Alpha H Liquid Gold

I don’t use physical exfoliant’s like scrubs anymore and prefer chemical exfoliants and find they work better on my skin. I kept reading rave reviews of the Alpha H Liquid Gold range so I bought the kit and gave it a go and loved it! My skin felt so supple and radiant after I started using it. The pack comes with 3 bottles which contain 3 varying concentrations of Glycolic Acid in them. You finish one bottle before moving on to the next to get your skin used to the products.

8. Favourtie Mask- Omorovicza Deep Cleanising Mask

I love watching skin care video’s by Ruth over at ‘A Model Reccomends’ and after she spoke about this mask, I went out and tried it. I love this brand and this mask is fantastic. I use it when my skin feels clogged or a week or two before a special event to give my skin a good deep clean. It’s quite pricey so I use it sparingly when I can.

So there you have it, my 2013 Skin Care Favourites! It should go without saying that these are my favourites and what works well on my skin. They may not work on yours so always make sure you read ingredient lists and other reviews before you try them.
