About Me/Contact

Hi,   my name’s Ahalya and I’m a 29 year old Melbourne based beauty blogger.

I work as a lawyer by day to fund my shopping addiction and blog about my purchases whenever I get the chance. I love my job and have no plans of giving it up any time soon but I have been toying with the idea of taking a makeup course on the side as a hobby.

My blog

I started my blog in March 2010 because my friends were sick of listening to me talk about makeup and beauty and I wanted someone to tell all my thoughts about various products to. Fast forward 2+ years later and I’ve kept blogging because I love the interaction it allows me with like minded people such as yourself!

My photos

I use a Nikon D5000 camera to take all of my current photos. I don’t consider myself to be a photographic expert in any way and will admit that I still take an embarrasing amount of my photos on an autmoated setting…

If you have any suggestions on how I can improve my photos then I’m always grateful for the assistance or any constructive criticism.

If you want to use any of my photo’s on your blog or site then you may do so as long as you provide a link back to my site and email me the link of where it is used.

My skintone

I don’t think my blog is targetted to any particular group of people but those with a similar skin tone to me will probably find it the most useful. For reference my foundation colour in various brands are as follows:

  • MAC Face & Body: C6/ other MAC foundations: NC42/Mineralize Skin Finish Natural: Medium Dark (FYI- I find that MAC liquid foundations apart from Face and Body oxidise on me quite a bit and change colour after about 30 minutes of wear time and become quite orange)
  • NARS Sheer Glow: Syracuse
  • Becca Luminous Skin Colour: Bamboo
  • Make Up For Ever HD Foundation: Shade 153
  • Chantecaille Future Skin: Wheat
  • Estee Lauder Invisible Fluid Makeup: 4WN1

My must have beauty items:

  • Laura Mercier Under Eye Perfector in Orange/yellow
  • Laura Mercier Secret Brightening Powder
  • MAC Mineralize Skin Finish Natural in Medium Dark
  • Chanel Rouge Allure Laque in Dragon
  • MAC Cork, Bamboo and Solar White eyeshadows
  • Shisheido’s The Makeup Automatic Fine Liner
  • Bioderma Cleansing water
  • Urban Decay Primer Potion
  • MAC Stud Brow Crayon
  • NARS Exhibit A blush
  • Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair Serum
  • Clarisonic
  • Sigma Flat Top kabuki brush
  • NARS Yachiyo blush brush

I love the lipstick you are wearing in your About Me pic. Can you tell me the brand and shade?

    • July 8, 2012 at 5:31 PM #

Thank you, it’s one of my favourite lip shades to wear. It’s not actually one product though, it’s a combo of 3. I used NYX Purple Rain lip liner topped with the Kate Moss for Rimmel Lasting Finish lipstick in shade #4 (dark purple) finished off with Revlon Lip Butter in Lollipop. I’m sure you can find one lip product that comes up with the same shade though 🙂

Ahalya when I read your about me I thought I was reading about myself, except I’m 31! I am about to start my blog for the exact same reason as you, and also because I think the other solicitors at my firm are starting to get sick of me raving about each package I get haha. So nice to meet someone on the same page! Nirvana

Hi Nirvana 🙂 Sorry for the late reply, I’ve been neglecting my blog a bit! It’s so great to hear that there are other people out there like me! I felt nervous at first because I felt like people who knew me from the legal sector would think of me as superficial for having a beauty blog. It’s now been a few years and I don’t regret starting it. It’s been a great creative outlet and a place to meet people who like the same things. I’m sure there are people out there who judge me for having this blog but as Dr Seuss says, those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind 😉 Good luck with your blog and please stop by and give me the link when you’re up and running x

I just came across your blog and I just wanted to say I love it! Its so hard finding swatches on WOC which is why I started my blog and I’m glad to say I found yours!! I’m going to add your link to my favorite blog section (which I’m currently working on)! Can’t wait to see your upcoming posts!! I’m learning to shop my stash as well btw! Trying to save money for vacations!!!

      Hi C. Jay!

Thanks so much for the lovely comment.

Hope you have better luck shopping your stash than I have. It’s scary to think how many vacations the money we’ve probably spent on makeup could buy!

I checked out your blog and saw that you do youtube videos and can’t wait to go check them out. Thanks for stopping by 🙂

Hi, I’m so excited that I stumbled upon your blog. I wear the exact same foundation shades as you, and it is so hard to find make-up that works for me/another blogger who uses the same shade in everything so I will definitely be following your blog!

    • April 29, 2013 at 4:04 PM #

      Hi Ariel,

Thank you for the lovely comment! Sorry it took me so long to respond.

I know it’s so hard to find other people who use the same foundation shades!

I’m glad if my swatches can help you narrow down what will work for you 🙂

I’ve just recently come across your website and I can honestly say that I am so thankful that I did! I’m pretty sure that we have the same skin type and tone which is a huge plus because it is so hard to find make up gurus who have a darker skin tone.

Unfortunately, I also have dark circles under my eyes and some fine lines as well 😦 But I looked through your blog and went ahead to purchase the Laura Mercier perfector and TheBalm concealer as well! They are coming in next week and I am super excited to try them out! My only question is about the Laura Mercier Secret Brightening Powder. I was wondering if it settles into fine lines and if it flash photography causes a white cast on the under eye area in pictures?

Thank you for taking the time to post here! Love your blog!
    Take care x

      Hi Bhavisha,

Sorry for the extremely late reply!

An update on the undereye concealer, I still swear by the Laura Mercier Undereye perfector but my new go to concealers have been the Burberry one and the NARS Radiant creamy concealer.

I do still love the LM secret brightening powder but am currently giving the NARS light reflecting powder a go.

The LM powder doesn’t settle into fine lines for me as long as I use the LM powder brush that is recommended for it. I usually don’t like buying things just because they’re recommended to be used together but in this case, that brush really is the best one that works. Heres the link to the brush I’m talking about: http://www.lauramercier.com/store/shop/Brushes%20for%20Face_Camouflage%20Powder%20Brush_prod220108

I haven’t noticed a flash back issue with it but if you use a lot, I think it will start to flash back. Let me know if that answered your qn 🙂

pls pls pls, I hope you plan on reviewing Guerlain Garconne lipstick soon. I’ve read it is a close dupe to your fav discontinued lipstick Chanel dragon.

    • October 29, 2013 at 1:32 PM #

      Hi Liz,

I was so hoping it would be a dupe but it’s not (at least not on me). I will put up a review though so you can see the difference. I wish Chanel would just bring back Dragon already!

Hey! I was looking for Liz Earle cleanser reviews and found your blog! I was attracted by the beautiful photograph and now I am hooked to the blog. I am not a big makeup junkie, but I love my skincare a lot 🙂 Love your posts, keep it coming

Thanks Vaishnavi. I’ve run out of the Liz Earle now but it’s on my list to go back to once I’ve finished off a few of my current products 🙂

    • July 22, 2014 at 9:06 AM #

Thanks Vaishnavi! I love the Liz Earle cleanser and it’s on my list of things to go back to once I finish up a few more of my current products 🙂

Its seems whenever I hear about any popular lip product, you always seem to have tried it on your page. Its awesome because then I get the idea of how it would really look on the skin and if its really worth buying or not. Excellent blog and quite informative too.

    • July 22, 2014 at 9:04 AM #

Thank you but it probably just goes to show how deep my shopping addiction is when it comes to makeup and lip products especially! I always try and do full face and lip swatches because I know how different things can look swiped on your hand compared with applied on your face

Hi! Amazingly we have a lot of the same make up products and i was wondering where you are currently buying the Laura Mercier Under Eye Perfector? I cannot find it in ay of my usual places, have tried a few other concealers and nothing is as good! Please let me know, i cannot live with it!

Hi Christine 🙂 I don’t know if you’re in Melbourne but I buy mine from David Jones. Laura Mercier stands are getting quite hard to find though unfortunately which sucks because they make such great products! I used to also get it online from Strawberrynet or Kissandmakeupny. Good luck!
