What are your personal makeup rules?

I woke up this morning and decided it was a red lip kind of day. As I was preparing my face for the piece de resistance lipstick (Chanel Dragon of course) I kept following all these makeup rules in my head.

My makeup rules for when I’m wearing red lips are :

  • Foundation that isn’t matte or heavy (Estee Lauder Double Wear mixed with Becca Luminous Skin Foundation)
  • Very simple radiant eye makeup (MAC Woodwinked, Cork in the crease and some mascara
  • Little to no blush (today I decided to go with none)

These aren’t rules that I think everyone should follow but they’re things I pretty much always do to make myself comfortable with wearing a red lip.

I have other makeup rules I follow such as I never pull my liquid liner all the way across my top lashline and I don’t wear dark shadow across my whole lid. They’re things I think look great on other people but I just feel like I look odd when I do them.

It got me thinking about what other people’s rules are because I’m sure everyone has their thing they personally think they have to do or think they definitely can’t do even though they wouldn’t give it out as general makeup advice.

So I want to know, do you have a personal makeup rule? If you do, what is it? Let me know below!

You know, since I have been experimenting with a lot of different products, colours and finishes i've found my personal makeup rules have been broken left, right and centre. I used to think that I just couldn't go without wearing eyeliner, and through pure time constraints one morning sure enough I walked out the door with mascara, blush, bronzer, concealer and a bright lipstick on. As I caught myself in mirrors or windows throughout the day I actually really liked the look and it was kind of refreshing to see my eyes without all that eye makeup on. And I used to think that I could never wear a lightweight foundation, or tinted moisturiser only, but now i've really embraced that. So I think its just a matter of trying different things and getting used to how your face looks when you do them. One thing i've recently been abandoning latley is bottom eyeliner, i've been using eyeshadow with a pencil brush or smudger brush instead and I am digging the softer looks it gives.

You look fantastic! Love Dragon on you. It is currently at the top of my wishlist.I agree 100% with your rules for a red lip. No blush is quite nice!As for personal makeup rules, mine mostly have to do with eyebrows. I do bold lips/bold brows, and bold eyes/soft brows. I find it balances my makeup look, otherwise it looks too harsh.

I almost always prime, line and powder my lips before I apply lipstick. I hate getting caught going through this ritual in the Ladies' at work because I feel like it's my dirty little beauty secret.

Ooooh, beautiful!I'm sure I have loads but I can't think right now… though I agree with the eyeliner thing, I used to wear it alllll across my top lashline from inside to out, then when I tried just from the middle to out, I realised how much more open my eyes looked and just how… friendlier my face in general seemed to be! Plus, I have short eyelashes so not having any liquid eyeliner in the inside corner really helps bring out the even shorter eyelashes that exist there.Ooohh, I also NEVER wear sparkly blush or lipstick (maybe on a night out but even then, rarely). I used to when I was a bit younger but now I just think it's tacky and horrible, and completely unnatural, especially when you can just see the sparkly golden bits sitting on your face!
