How to make dark lips wearble

It’s Spring in most parts of the world but here in Australia we’ve just started Autumn and that means that makeup in rich, dark hues becomes on trend. I especially love wearing a dark lip colour during this season but dark lips automatically look quite sultry so it’s easy to look too overdone if you’re not careful with the rest of your makeup.

A dark eye paired with a dark lip has its place but for everyday wear it’s a bit much.

The modern way to wear a dark lip is to pair it with a ‘no makeup’ makeup face so that the end result is effortless and chic. It’s the perfect way to wear a lip colour during the day that you may usually only reserve for the night. I thought I’d share some of my top tips for pulling off a dark lip no matter the occasion.

Skin: Keep your foundation a bit dewy and use an illuminator. Dark lips can darken up your look a little too much so it’s important to keep your skin bright and highlighted.

Exfoliate your lips: Dark lipstick’s and lipglosses are notorious for emphasising any imperfections on your lips so make sure you exfoliate well before putting these shades on.

Line those lips: Dark lipsticks like any other bold lip colour have a tendency to look quite patchy when they wear off so it’s always best to line and fill in your lips with a lipliner before applying these shades.

To blush or not to blush: If you want to keep your look quite girly and romantic then pair your dark lips with a rosy cheek but if you want an understated look then stick with contoured cheeks and a bit of bronzer.

Define your brows: You want to balance your look out so if you’re keeping your eye makeup quite minimal, you need to define your brows to frame your eyes and stop your lips from stealing the show!

Eyes: My favourite eye look to pair with a dark lip is a warm toned shimmery eyeshadow that’s a shade or two lighter than my skin tone.

I’ve been wearing this look a lot lately and all I use is MAC Cashflow Paint Pot (Gold) on the lid, Too Faced Honey Pot eyeshadow (honey gold) on the lid and around the tear duct and MAC Cork eyeshadow to blend out the crease.

I skip any obvious eyeliner and instead define my eyes by tightlining. Check out this post if you don’t know what tightlining is or how to do it. I then curl my lashes and add lots of mascara.

My lip favourite dark lip product at the moment has been Smashbox Lip Enhancing gloss in Sultry. What’s yours? Do you like wearing dark lip colours? Let me know below!

[…] This shade was one of my staples during fall/winter because it’s vampy without being too dark. It’s what I like to think of as a modern dark lip and works perfectly with gold eyeshadow on the lids. If you want a more pigmented look then you can easily layer this over a darker lipliner or lipstick but you would detract from this product. This is meant to be an easy to wear shade so my tip is not to over complicate it. If you want some of my tips on wearing dark lip colour’s, check out this old post. […]

[…] I was watching Lisa Eldridge putting on makeup as I did my makeup this morning and was inspired  to rock a vampy lip. The video for Elle magazine was on how to wear bold lip colour’s and she used some great dark lipsticks. I’ve already done a post on some of my tips for pulling off dark lips here.  […]
