Beauty Fail: Covergirl Exact Eyelights Mascara

I know this mascara has been out for quite a while now but I just found it when I was going through my makeup case and remembered how I felt about it and decided to do a post. So I guess the title gives it away that I was not impressed by this mascara but let me tell you why. Now, I’m not one of those people that expects alot out of mascara. I’m pretty happy with my lashes as they are and I don’t need crazy volume or length so it’s rare for me to find a mascara I hate. I do really dislike this mascara though and it actually has nothing to do with how it applies or how it makes my lashes look because it actually functions ok as a mascara. My issue with this product is that it doesn’t deliver on the one thing it was advertised to provide.

This is the spiel from the Covergirl website:
“Get 4x brighter eyes* with Exact Eyelights Mascara! Light-reflecting metallics and a hint of tint bring out your blues, browns, hazels and greens, while our patented no-clump brush helps define lashes.
* vs. bare lashes “

Hmm… I should have known better but Rihanna looked so pretty in the promo picture and I was just really intrigued by the concept of a mascara providing ‘brighter eyes’ on the basis of your eye colour so I gave it a try.

Firstly here’s the brush. It’s nothing special. I was really underwhelmed when I took it out but I’ve been proven wrong before by brushes that look normal but work wonders on the lashes.

Apparently there’s some light reflecting glitter or something in the mascara that results in this eye brightening effect. I’ll let you judge for yourself below:

I can’t deny the fact that the mascara seems to give pretty good length and it didn’t clump. I didn’t like the fact that it just makes your lashes stick straight out without providing a natural curl. In terms of eye brightening though, I’m seeing no effect. My friend pointed out to me that because the flash in the picture where I’m wearing the mascara was a bit brighter, I actually do look like I have brighter eyes but I swear the effect is from the lighting and not the product! That’s the reason why I consider it to be a beauty fail. Don’t sell me something on the basis of an effect that your product doesn’t provide! The only reviews supporting an eye brightening effect seem to be on the Covergirl website which seems a bit biased to me but anyway, that’s my rant for the day.

    Hey, totally agree the ‘4 x brighter’ is a load of @*($&(%…… But honestly, I love the brush with this! I wish it was a regular, deep black mascara with this brush and not tinted with sparkles because even though it doesn’t brighten, it does do a good job of separating and lengthening.. your eyelashes look pretty anyway! 🙂

      Thanks Bec 🙂

      It’s been a long time since I’ve used it but I remember my main issue was with how it was advertised. If they’d just advertised it as a normal mascara, maybe I would have loved it! It just annoys me when companies come out with all these gimmicks that don’t actually work. Thanks for reading!
